A Guide to Home Roofing Trends & the Metal Roof

savannah ga strong metal roofing installedThe upcoming year 2018 probably won’t be the year that metal roofing outstrips shingle roofs in new construction and roof replacements, but there’s a definite trend heading in that direction.

Looking just at replacements, each year in North America, seven million homeowners have their homes re-roofed.  According to the Metal Roofing Alliance, 10 percent of those new roofs in 2014 were metal, a number expected to climb to 20 percent by 2020.

This trend isn’t surprising when you consider the advantages of metal roofs compared with traditional shingle roofs.  Metal roofing material lasts longer, insulates better, cuts utility bills, is highly resistant to strong winds and bad weather and, last but hardly least, looks fantastic.

Here are some of the reasons we expect a continued shift toward metal roofing as North America’s roof material of choice.

Increased home-improvement spending

We’re in a period of stable growth in home-improvement spending.  Homeowners have the money to make wise choices, and when it comes to replacing their roofs, sturdy metal, which lasts two to three times longer than traditional roofing material, is beginning to be seen as the absolute best choice.

Energy-efficiency

When consumers have money to spend and choices available, they’re looking these days at energy-efficient solutions that turn into investments.  With it’s amazing sun-reflectivity and sound design, metal roofing can bring homeowners about 25 percent more in energy savings than asphalt shingles.

The environment

One look at the way people are voting, the causes they’re supporting and the products they’re buying tells you that protecting the environment is on the minds of many.  Metal roofs do their job in this area as they are 100 percent recyclable.  Asphalt shingles, on the other hand, contribute 11 million tons of waste to our landfills each year.

The increase of solar

Solar PV installations nearly doubled between 2015 and 2016, and with the sizeable Solar Investment Tax Credit remaining in place through 2021, this growth is expected to continue.  Because solar panels are mounted on roofs, obviously homeowners want the most secure installation possible.  Metal roofs provide that.

Residential construction saw steady growth in 2017, and if that trend continues, we’ll see more and more contractors and developers offering new homes with metal roofing.  Not only will the roofs last longer, but homeowners will appreciate the choice of a step up in overall quality from traditional shingle roofs.
