Water-resistant and\u00a0water-shedding refer to the pitch of the roof, not to the materials that\u00a0make\u00a0up the roof.\u00a0\u00a0A pitch of 3:12, for\u00a0example, means that for every 12 feet, there is a\u00a0three-foot rise.<\/p>\n

Where these two terms are\u00a0concerned, a water-resistant roof (or section of the roof) has\u00a0a pitch of 3:12\u00a0or less.\u00a0\u00a0Roofs with greater pitches are\u00a0labeled water-shedding roofs.<\/p>\n

Because of a water-resistant\u00a0roof\u2019s lower pitch, water moves across it more slowly,\u00a0making it unnecessary\u00a0for there to be a secondary membrane beneath the roof to keep\u00a0water from\u00a0leaking into the home.\u00a0\u00a0The steeper pitch\u00a0of water-shedding roofs causes\u00a0water to move much faster, creating the need for\u00a0an underlying membrane.<\/p>\n

Water-resistant roofs<\/h2>\n

Roofs with lower pitches normally\u00a0don\u2019t shed water with great efficiency.\u00a0\u00a0This can result\u00a0in water that pools and stays in place for some period\u00a0of time and finds its way into any\u00a0gap or opening in the roof.\u00a0\u00a0For this reason, quality, professional\u00a0installation of the metal\u00a0roof is critical.\u00a0\u00a0A badly installed water-resistant roof can lead to serious water damage\u00a0to everything below the roof including insulation and decking as well as\u00a0contents within\u00a0the home.<\/p>\n

The best water-resistant metal\u00a0roof is a standing seam roof with seams that are two\u00a0inches high at\u00a0minimum.\u00a0\u00a0Water is prevented from\u00a0entering between the panels because\u00a0of mechanical seaming of the joints.<\/p>\n

Water-shedding roofs<\/h2>\n

Water will move faster across\u00a0roofs with pitches greater than 3:12.\u00a0\u00a0Most residential\u00a0roofs fall between 4:12 and 9:12, which provides for\u00a0maximum water shedding.\u00a0\u00a0Faster-moving\u00a0water, however, doesn\u2019t mean precautions aren\u2019t necessary to prevent leakage.<\/p>\n

These precautions include a\u00a0membrane or moisture barrier that\u2019s #30 felt or greater\u00a0over a solid deck.\u00a0\u00a0The most efficient (and most expensive)\u00a0membranes are \u201cpeel-and-stick,\u201d which are less likely to tear and will create a\u00a0solid seal around nails, screws and\u00a0other fasteners.<\/p>\n

When the highest quality\u00a0materials are used, and when the metal roof is installed by\u00a0experienced\u00a0roofers, you have an investment that will begin paying you back\u00a0immediately.\u00a0\u00a0Regardless of the pitch\u00a0angle of a roof, certain steps must be taken to\u00a0prevent leaks and excess\u00a0condensation.\u00a0\u00a0Expert installers know all\u00a0these steps.<\/p>\n
