\"FLIf you don\u2019t understand lightning and why, how and where it strikes, you might believe that a metal roof on your home<\/a> could become dangerous by attracting lightning during a thunderstorm.\u00a0 If you do<\/em> understand lightning, however, you know this is not the case.<\/p>\n

Lightning can shoot from cloud to cloud, or it can come out of a cloud to strike the earth.\u00a0 In the latter instance, several factors determine how the earth-coursing lightning will behave.\u00a0 We\u2019ll look at elements of a lightning strike momentarily, but first let\u2019s understand what lightning is.<\/p>\n

This thing called lightning<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lightning happens when static electricity in the atmosphere is rapidly discharged.\u00a0 Usually occurring during a thunderstorm, this discharge produces a flash.\u00a0 You can observe lightning during a storm and see if it is striking between clouds or shooting from a cloud to the ground.\u00a0 The light is black body radiation formed by the extremely hot plasma created by the electron flow.<\/p>\n

Lightning is very dangerous to humans, as we all know.\u00a0 Fortunately, because of lightning\u2019s typical behavior, it\u2019s highly unlikely that a person walking on the street will be struck by it.\u00a0 This is why we have the phrase, \u201cThat\u2019s about as unlikely as being struck by lightning.\u201d<\/p>\n

But lightning can and does strike various objects, and that\u2019s what we want to explore.<\/p>\n

Elements of a lightning strike<\/strong><\/p>\n

First: lightning usually will strike the highest object in its vicinity regardless of its composition.\u00a0 Tall trees are often victims, as are tall buildings.\u00a0 Lightning rods are placed very high above other structures because we know that in most cases lightning will hit them first.<\/p>\n

Metal is not an attractor of lightning \u2013 when lightning strikes, it will strike anywhere and hit anything in its path.\u00a0 Where roofs are concerned, the important point isn\u2019t whether or not a roof attracts lightning but rather how lightning will behave once it hits the roof.<\/p>\n

Now, while metal doesn\u2019t attract<\/em> lightning, it is a fine conductor of it.\u00a0 When lightning hits a large metal structure<\/a>, the metal absorbs the lightning and distributes it throughout the surface.\u00a0 On the other hand, roofs with poor conducting materials (asphalt shingles, clay tiles, etc.) will take the full brunt of the lightning\u2019s heat at the point of impact, resulting in potentially significant damage and possibly a fire.<\/p>\n

\"strongA metal roof won\u2019t burn from a lightning strike.\u00a0 Like the metal lightning rod, it disperses the power of the lightning, softening the blow, so to speak.\u00a0 Compare that to a tall tree that is the victim of a lightning strike: the tree easily can catch fire and burn and smoke for hours.<\/p>\n

So the bottom line is, we can\u2019t prevent a lightning strike, but should it hit the home we\u2019re living in, we should expect little or no damage if our roof is made of quality metal.\u00a0 If it\u2019s made of something else, we might be looking at a long road to recovery.<\/p>\n
